DOL / OSHA Job application process summary
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) offers exciting challenges and career development opportunities for diverse, talented and enthusiastic people who will serve the work force of tomorrow. DOL provides a great benefits package to eligible employees including health benefits, supplemental dental and vision plans, flexible spending accounts, 13 days paid sick leave per year, 10 paid holidays per year, and a family-friendly work environment.
In this blog post I will provide key information and tips to make it easier for you to search for your ideal job, apply for it as well as leverage the resources that DOL provides for Job Seekers/Unemployed and Employers.
Navigating the OSHA/DOL Job site
The Department of Labor (DOL) Online Opportunities Recruitment System (DOORS) is an automated e-Recruit system that allows you to access vacancy announcements and apply for jobs. DOORS is fully integrated with USAJOBS, the official job Web site of the U.S. Government.
Start with USAJOBS, click on “Create An Account” link in the upper right, fill out the requested information. Once you have created your account, sign-in and build your resume. A specific tip here is to upload supporting documents as well including cover letter, DD-214, ST-15, ST-50 etc, you can upload up to six documents. Also click “Activate” once you have finished your resume.
Searching for OSHA/DOL Jobs
Now you are ready to search for jobs on USAJOBS, I would strongly recommend creating your specific search and then saving the search. You can create up to 10 saved searches, and this improves your efficiency in searching for specific jobs that interest you.
You can also directly search for jobs on the Department of Labor (DOL) Online Opportunities Recruitment System (DOORS). Once you have entered the search criteria and identified the job opportunity, you are provided with five tabs giving specific information about the job including “How to Apply” as shown below,
If the application supports “Apply Online” you will have access to the resume you build in USAJOBS and all the supporting documents and you can apply for the job.
Veterans Preference
When completing the USAJOBS profile, if you are a veteran ensure you claim the appropriate preference.
There are basically two types of preference criteria, disabled (10 point preference eligible) and non-disabled (5 point preference eligible). If you are not sure of your preference eligibility, visit the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Preference Advisor.
